Configuring UTM Parameters in Google Ads

Step 1: Account-Level Configuration

For tracking to work across the entire account in a standardized way, you must define the structure once in the global settings.

  1. In the side menu, click on Admin and then on Account settings.
  2. Locate the Tracking section.
  3. In the Tracking template field, enter the following dynamic parameter:

{lpurl}?utm_source={_origem}&utm_medium={_midia}&utm_campaign={_campanha}&utm_content={_conteudo}&utm_term={_termo}

  1. Click Save.

Step 2: Setting Up the Data in the Ads

Now that the account knows how to read the UTMs, you need to define what will be written in them within each ad.

  1. Access the edit page of a specific Ad.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page until you find Ad URL options.
  3. In the Custom parameters field, click the "+" button to add the fields you created in Step 1.
  4. Fill them out as follows (example):
    • _origem = google
    • _midia = cpc
    • _campanha = your_campaign_name
    • _conteudo = banner_variation_a
    • _termo = target_keyword

Step 3: Testing and Validation

Before publishing, it is essential to ensure that Google Ads can correctly build the URL.

  1. Below the completed fields, click the Test button.
  2. The system will simulate a click. If a green checkmark appears next to the URL, it means tracking is active and error-free.
  3. Click Save ad.

Why use this method?

By using custom parameters (such as {_origem}), you avoid typos in long URLs and can quickly change the source or campaign name without having to edit the final ad link.
