# How to use Retention to analyze your video's performance

**Retention** allows you to track viewer behavior throughout your video playback, helping you identify drop-off points and analyze engagement and views over time.
You can also filter the data to get more specific insights based on countries, devices, operating systems, browsers, traffic sources, and conversions.

### What is it for?

Retention allows you to:

* Identify drop-off points throughout the video.
* Analyze engagement and views over time.
* Compare metrics by country.
* Compare Mobile vs. Desktop performance.
* Analyze metrics by operating system and browser.
* Compare performance based on traffic source.
* Track how conversions accumulate throughout video playback.

### How to access Retention

1. Log in to your VTurb account.
2. Open the video you want to analyze.
3. Click **Analytics** in the side menu.
4. Select **Retention**.

### General Retention

The **General Retention** chart provides an overview of metrics over time and is especially useful for understanding **engagement** and **views**.
Engagement and view metrics are also displayed directly on the chart, making data analysis easier.

### Conversion Retention

This feature allows you to visualize how conversions accumulate throughout video playback.

When the **Conversions** toggle is enabled, a blue line is displayed on the chart, representing the cumulative total number of conversions at each point in the video timeline.

![](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/-/3/9/0/a/390a843820d6ba00/image_1ma9bay.png)

It is important to note that the values shown do not represent the number of conversions that occurred during a specific minute of the video.

Instead, the blue line displays the total accumulated conversions recorded from the moment the checkout button was shown up to that point in the playback.

### How are conversions counted?

1. The button click is considered the conversion time.
2. Button clicks after the end of the video are counted in the last second of the video.
3. The chart shows the total number of conversions over time.
4. This chart is only available when [Conversion Tracking](https://help.vturb.com/en-us/article/conversion-tracking-14gm4m3/) is enabled and there is at least one conversion.

### Available filters

You can also analyze Retention using different filters.

### Custom Metrics

Custom metrics allow users to create and monitor personalized metrics for specific analysis of video performance.

###### Benefits of Custom Metrics:

1. **More control and power:** Custom metrics give users greater control over the data they want to monitor. This allows them to focus on specific metrics of interest, such as initial retention, retention up to a certain point in the video, among others.

2. **Detailed and personalized analysis:** With custom metrics, users can conduct a more detailed and personalized analysis of video performance. This functionality is especially useful for advanced customers who want to track specific retention metrics over time.

**How to Create a Custom Metric:**

In the **Retention** tab, you can find the **"Customize Metric"** button.

![](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/390a843820d6ba00/screenshot4_8qfhjx.png =1032xauto)

By clicking this button, you can create a **metric** based on **Retention** or a **Formula**:

###### Retention:
With **Retention**, you can create a metric called **"Lead Retention"** to monitor the retention rate up to the 3-minute mark of the video. The result will be displayed as shown in the illustration below:

![](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/390a843820d6ba00/screenshot3_s68dd3.png =1204xauto)

### Formula:
With **Formula**, you can create several different types of custom metrics:
1. Select the **Formula** tab.
2. Enter a name for the metric.
3. Choose the display format (**Number**, **Percentage**, or **Currency**).
4. Build the formula using the available metrics and mathematical operators:
    * **+** Addition
    * **-** Subtraction
    * **×** Multiplication
    * **/** Division
    * **( )** Calculation priority
* ![](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/-/3/9/0/a/390a843820d6ba00/image_x8tt7b.png)
* Click **Add Metric**.
The new metric will be displayed alongside the other Analytics metrics and can be used in your analyses as usual.

**EXAMPLE:**
You can calculate the Average Ticket by dividing **Revenue** by the number of **Conversions**:
```
Revenue ÷ Conversions
```

### Useful Information:
1. There is a total limit of 15 metrics that can be added, including the already available standard metrics.
2. After adding 7 custom metrics, it will not be possible to add more.
3. Metrics can be reordered and edited as needed.
4. It is possible to hide or 'unhide' custom metrics, but it is not possible to delete the standard metrics.

###### Downloading metrics

You can download your Analytics data in **CSV** or **XLSX** format.

### Reset Metrics

You can also reset your video's Analytics metrics if you want to start a new analysis!

|| If your video is participating in any Test (Turbo, Hook, or A/B Test), this option will not be available.

By doing this, Analytics will start counting new data from the next full hour.

For example: If you reset it at 12:19, the new data will be counted from 1 PM; If it is at 3:58 PM, the new count will start at 4 PM...

Important to remember that this is an **irreversible action**, but **will not affect the play count for your Awards!**

To reset your video's Analytics, click the icon indicated below:
